LGBTQ+ at Hallam

A diverse and supportive community

Sheffield is a diverse, welcoming city with a big LGBTQ+ student community and as a university, we want you to feel that you can be yourself throughout your time here but we also know that some aspects of university life can be harder if you identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, non-binary or any other identity under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella. That’s why we have an active support system to make sure that you feel comfortable and included.

LGBTQ+ society

Sheffield Hallam's Student LGBTQ+ society exists to provide a safe and inclusive space for members of the LGBTQ+ community to interact, make friends, and be themselves. They host socials and offer various channels for students to interact with the LGBTQ+ community of Sheffield.

Their goals are to:

  • Represent the LGBTQ+ community at Hallam University.
  • Creative visibility for our society and expand our community.
  • Connect the LGBTQ+ community of Sheffield.
  • Provide a safe and inclusive space for the LGBTQ+ community.

Sheffield’s LGBTQ+ community

With two huge universities, our city has an active and friendly community of LGBTQ+ students and allies.

Alongside the Students’ Union, we play a major role in supporting the wider community, supporting big local events such as Pride and Pinknic.

LGBTQ+ student support

If you need one-to-one support, we have LGBTQ+ advisers on hand to help. You can access a range of academic and wellbeing support from the university, as well as independent advice from the Students’ Union.

Our careers service also offers specialist LGBTQ+ support to help you feel confident applying for jobs and getting used to life at work.

Tackling bullying and harassment

We don’t tolerate harassment or abuse of any kind. Our Report and Support service allows you to report anything you experience or witness. You can report anonymously if you want to, and request access to specialist support staff.

Confidentiality

Sexuality and gender identity have extra protections under privacy law, and we take our responsibilities very seriously. Anything you disclose to us stays confidential. You can read more about how we use and protect data in our student privacy notice.

You can read more about our equality and diversity policies and guidance.
